Kahurangi launches new album
International performing arts company Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre will launch its new album, marking its 30th anniversary, as part of the National Waiata Maori Music Awards this week.
The album is called, Te Taumata, and it will be launched at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House foyer on Wednesday, September 11, 6pm to 9pm. The Waiata Maori Music Awards two-day event will also be held at the opera house over the following two days, September 12 and 13.
One of the founders of Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre, Tama Huata, Hastings, said the new album would be a “best of” production reflecting the past 30 years since the group’s inception. The album was recorded in Wellington earlier this year.
“We had current members of Kahurangi and a few members from the past involved in recording this particular album,” Mr Huata said.
“And we have breathed new life into some of the older songs that we have done, we have refined them.” Further details of the album will be released at the launch.
Mr Huata is also executive director of the National Waiata Maori Music Awards which is on target to begin Thursday, September 12.
