Equidays to hold Pony Derby with major prizes from Honda Motorcycles

Hot on the heels of an announcement that Equidays will be running their first horse Derby at the October event, organisers are thrilled to release details of the Pony Derby sponsored by Honda Motorcycles.

On Sunday 20 October, the concluding day of Equidays, the Honda Pony Derby will feature 50 of New Zealand’s top riders, aged 16 years and under, with their ponies competing against each other over a one kilometre course.

Equidays spokesperson Sarah Riches says, “This is the first time NZ riders will have the chance to compete in a pony derby and with some amazing prizes from Honda up for grabs it will be a high speed competition that will be great to watch!”

Derby events are rare on the New Zealand equine calendar so organisers have had a great response from riders and are expecting huge excitement amongst spectators too.

A spokesperson for Blue Wing Honda said Honda Motorcycles is proud to be the principal sponsor of the inaugural Pony Derby.

“The Pony Derby is a great addition to Equidays events. This event will be fun for both competitors and spectators, and those competing will have the opportunity to win a fantastic Honda CRF farm bike.”

First place will win a CRF230F valued at $7399, second place wins a CRF150F valued at $5999, and third place will win a CRF100F valued at $4499.

The derby is a mix between show jumps and natural styled fences and is set to test the riders in both skill and agility.

Sure to be a crowd pleaser, the derby’s high intensity, technical course has been designed by top designer Gerrit Beker and will showcase speed and precision.

There will be plenty of entertainment for spectators who can catch the action from the grandstand or various viewing points around the course to get a close up view of how riders navigate the various challenges of undulating ground, banks, ditches and natural fences.

The Honda Pony Derby, brought to you by Equidays, will be limited to 50 riders. Entry details are provided in the September issue of The Bulletin and entries will close 27 September 2013. For further information visit www.equidays.co.nz
