Wintec fashion students take CanTeen’s Bandanna Challenge to new level
Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology) fashion design students have taken the Bandanna Challenge to a new level by creating complete outfits made out of CanTeen bandannas.
The outfits - which include 11 dresses designed to the theme, ‘a day at the races’ - will be showcased at a fundraising dinner and silent auction in celebration of CanTeen’s annual appeal Bandanna Challenge this Thursday at Wintec’s student training restaurant, Windows, in Hamilton.
During the evening, 11 young people living with cancer will model the bandanna outfits – a project the fashion students have been working on since July. Following the showcase, each student will explain the concept of their designs to guests. Wintec’s beauty students will also be involved supplying makeup services for the models.
The evening’s three-course meal will be prepared and served by Wintec’s hospitality and cookery students who will be assessed as part of their training during the evening. Plus, a CanTeen Waikato member and other emerging Hamilton musicians will provide musical entertainment throughout the event.
Wintec chief executive, Mark Flowers says: “Our students are involved in a variety of community initiatives. This event is an exciting opportunity to celebrate our up and coming talent while raising money for and awareness of the needs of young people living with cancer in our region.”
CanTeen Youth Worker, Charlene Bowie says, “This event is a fantastic opportunity for our young people to get involved in a really positive community event.
“Living with cancer is traumatic, but we’re about helping people to continue to enjoy life. This initiative will help us raise money for future activities and programmes to help them cope with cancer and find normality in their lives.”
CanTeen supports, develops and empowers young people, aged 13-24, living with cancer through a national peer support network and professional, educational and recreational programmes. CanTeen Waikato currently has 110 members throughout the region.
The bandannas are $4 each and can be purchased at www.canteen.org.nz and participating retailers including Four Square, New World, PAK’nSAVE, Warehouse Stationary, Burger King, BP, Repco and Farmers. CanTeen’s Bandana Challenge runs from 13-29 September.
