20 years in, and the Wattie’s Cans Film Festival is still going strong, helping Kiwis in need by collecting much needed cans of food for The Salvation Army food banks across the nation.
Throughout those years, Kiwis have supported the cause by heading along to their local participating cinema up to ten days before the night of the Festival, and swapping a can of food for a movie ticket. With well over one million cans donated to the Salvation Army, Kiwis can be proud of their efforts, as the nation’s neighbourly nature continues to thrive.
Hitting this milestone means that there is plenty of reason to celebrate, and with a raft of top secret activity rolling out as part of this year’s Festival, New Zealanders can look forward to helping out their fellow Kiwis while getting involved in the Festival in new and exciting ways.
From Monday the 4th of November, Kiwis around the country can visit their local participating movie theatres and swap a can for a movie ticket. The Festival then takes place on Wednesday 13th November, when those who have swapped a can for a ticket will be able to head along and see a film! Wattie’s then matches each can donated with one of their own cans and all cans go to The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal.
A total of 43,064 cans were donated to The Salvation Army via the Festival last year. This year, the Wattie’s Cans Film Festival hopes to collect even more donations. But New Zealand will need to get behind the Festival to make it happen, and ensure that The Salvation Army has the resources it needs to look after those Kiwis who need a helping hand.
“The Christmas period is a very difficult period for many Kiwis. We would struggle to meet the demand for food parcels during this time without the help of the Wattie’s Cans Film Festival, and the on-going donations from New Zealanders keen to help out their communities,” says Shane Chisholm, Territorial Public Relations Director, The Salvation Army New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga Territory.
“We’ve been proud to have Wattie’s support over the past 20 years, and know that The Wattie’s Cans Film Festival is a great way for Kiwis to help each other out in a really fun way! For the price of a can of food – you can see a movie and feel good about it.”
Reading Cinemas, EVENT Cinemas, and Hoyts Cinemas are once again generously offering their theatres for the night, along with independent cinemas nationwide. This year, the Festival will run at approximately 40 locations.
More details will be coming soon. But for now, save the date – Wednesday 13 November – for a night of fun and entertainment for all the family, and a chance to lend a hand to those who need it the most – all in the one sitting!
