Tribute to John Adshead Planned By New Football Organisation
A new football organisation is launching with a tribute evening to former All Whites coach John Adshead ONZM on October 18 this year, with monies raised going into trust for worthy football related projects and causes.
Friends of Football is a not for profit organisation set up to share a common interest and love for the beautiful game, counting amongst their objectives the wish to promote and enhance the profile of the game in New Zealand, while also raising funds to contribute to worthwhile football related causes.
The launch event in Auckland on October 18 is a tribute by way of a Roast of John Adshead, coach of the 1982 All Whites team at the World Cup in Spain. This special evening will feature a select group of guest speakers ‘Roasting’ John Adshead in their own unique way, before ‘JA’ enjoys the right of reply on a night not to be missed by football fans and sports enthusiasts throughout New Zealand.
Former international goalkeeper and Chairman of New Zealand football John Morris is on the foundation Friends of Football Committee and promises a great night.
“When we were looking at an event to introduce Friends of Football to the community we could think of no better way than to pay tribute to John and all that he has done for the game in this country. His influence goes well beyond taking the All Whites to Spain, he is a name familiar to all New Zealanders, let alone the football community.
“This will be a night not to be missed with plenty of great banter, a few familiar faces and a chance to enjoy a shared passion for football and acknowledge one of the most influential names in the history of the sport in this country.”
Included amongst the captivating and sure to be humorous speakers on the night will be some of Adshead’s great friends and colleagues from the early 80’s from the world of football and media, including print and radio journalist Phil Gifford and 82 Captain Steve Sumner, while Adshead himself will reply in his own inimitable style as the raconteur he has always been recognised as, ensuring an entertaining night full of great stories and a few laughs along the way.
The evening will also include an exclusive and limited auction of items to raise funds for Friends of Football.
