NZSO Brings the Magnificence of Mozart to North Island Centres
Undoubtedly one of the most influential composers of all time, we’ve all heard of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The NZSO concert tour Magnificent Mozart is the perfect opportunity to explore some of his most popular works, uncovering the genius and mastery of this
prodigious talent.

Internationally acclaimed conductor Nicholas McGegan will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to this ultimate Mozart experience. His approach to the Classical
period style has been described as “intelligent, infused with joy, and never dogmatic”. McGegan is a renowned specialist
with the music of Mozart and his contemporaries, and has also held the coveted post of Music Director at the San
Francisco Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra for nearly three decades. In what can only be described as a most distinguished
career, McGegan has led orchestras around the globe, as well as holding notable teaching posts and directorships.
Following his outstanding musical leadership, the NZSO will sweep audiences up in the grandeur and delight of this
programme, which is a perfect introduction to Mozart.
The concert opens with the phenomenally popular Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (A little Night Music). This work could almost be said to define Mozart himself: fresh and impressive, well-known, sparkling and joyful. This
serenade for the string section is instantly recognisable.
Two of the NZSO’s stars, Section Principal Flute Bridget Douglas and Section Principal Harp Carolyn Mills, then share the soloist’s spotlight in Mozart’s popular Concerto for Flute and Harp. The only major work that Mozart wrote for the harp, it’s also one of only two double concertos he penned. The flute
and harp soloists play with the orchestra but also trade melodies and form counterpoint harmony with each other. The
gentle tones of the harp and the lilting sound of the flute are a perfect partnership as these two stunning talents
buoyantly perform these lyrical virtuoso roles.
The orchestra then delights with ballet music, Chaconne that Mozart wrote for the opera Idomeneo. Paying tribute to the early Classical period French composer Gluck, the palate of Baroque colour is evident and
conductor McGegan will be in his element here.
Closing the concert in grand magnificence is Mozart’s Symphony No.41, known as the Jupiter symphony. This, his last symphony, is aptly named after the god Jupiter, the most powerful deity of the Roman pantheon.
The triumphant sounds and exploding joy of Symphony No.41 Jupiter will leave the audience wishing this mini-festival of Mozart would continue forever. The joy of Mozart’s music-making
will delight and entrance all alike - it truly is music for the soul.
Beginning in Whangarei, the tour travels to Kerikeri, Tauranga, Taupo, Napier, and Palmerston North in association with Pub Charity.
