NOBM Win Inaugural Unison 12th Grade Challenge Final
3 September 2013 – Napier Old Boys Marist’s Communicate NZ team flipped the tables on the Western Suburbs Wests on
Saturday, taking out points’ table leaders 39-7 to win the inaugural Unison 12th Grade Challenge final, held at Park
Island.
Western Suburbs went into the final at the top of the table, having been undefeated all season. NOBM were also strong
contenders, suffering their only loss of the season to Western Suburbs.
“The boys played brilliantly, and didn’t let the loss in round eight to the Wests get to them. They played with great
determination, and it paid off with the win. We’re really stoked to take the win and bring home the trophy for Napier
Old Boys Marist,” said Matt Wyatt, who along with Clint Chamberlain, has coached the team throughout the year.
“Western Suburbs were really committed and never gave up. It was a really well controlled game by referee Dave Goodall.”
The two teams are the first to contest for the custom-made trophy, created by local carver, Hugh Tareha from Waiohiki
Creative Arts Village.
“The Intercity Junior Rugby Board saw a need to offer our young players the chance to compete for the honour of being
the top team in the last year as juniors. We thought this was a fantastic idea, and were more than happy to support the
competition,” said Unison Customer Care and Relationship Manager, Danny Gough.
Each player in the final was presented with a Unison 12th Grade Challenge medal by Mr Gough, before Napier Old Boys
Marist received the trophy.
NOBM Club Convenor Paul Teddy said it has been a hard and rewarding season for NOBM 12th grade team.
“The team have worked hard all year, fundraising for a trip to Christchurch, and playing well all season.
“Thanks to all the support from Unison over the years with all the gear and resources they have given us. It’s an honour
to have won this trophy for the first time up, and a moment for our boys to cherish.”
“We’re thrilled to be able to offer these players the chance to enjoy competition rugby before they progress to
secondary school rugby, and hopefully representative rugby. Seeing the pride on the faces of the players as they
received the trophy makes us really proud to be Hawke’s Bay rugby’s greatest supporter,” said Mr Gough.
