Iconic Photographer Ans Westra to Hold Back-to-Back Exhibitions in Wellington & Gisborne
Following on from their success at the Auckland Art Fair 2013, {Suite} and PAULNACHE present “Back-to-Back Exhibitions” in Wellington and Gisborne, by iconic New Zealand photographer Ans Westra.
On show in Wellington will be “Rotorua Show”, a selection of black & white and colour images made by Ans during time spent in Rotorua in the early 1960s, and colour abstractions made in thermal areas during the last few years.
On show in Gisborne will be “East Coast Show”, a selection of black & white images made on the East Coast during the 1960s – 80s. Included in this exhibition is an early self-portrait and several images from Ans’ seminal 1963 series Washday at the Pa.
Born 1937 in Leiden, the Netherlands, Westra immigrated to New Zealand in 1957 and soon after began her career as a fulltime freelance documentary photographer. She is responsible for the most comprehensive documentation of Māori culture over 50 years of significant social and political change, and has produced some of the most important images in New Zealand photographic history. Ans Westra lives and works in Wellington, New Zealand.
