A finals for kiwi women at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Champs

Conditions were ideal for racing at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Germany with a slight tail wind and warm water today and it was certainly a day to chalk up for the women.

Lisa Carrington paddled two very strong races coming first in both her heat and semi to comfortably take a place in the A final of the K1 500m. Finishing her semi in a time of 1:54.301, 1.4 seconds ahead of South African Brigitte Hartley she feels confident there is plenty left in the tank for the final. High Performance Manager Grant Restall says “it’s going to be an epic battle in the final, and if I was a betting man I’d say the biggest battle will be between Lisa and Katrin Wagner-Augustin of Germany.” These two have been neck and neck since the World Cups last year and through the Olympics in the 200m, and it looks to continue into the 500m. As a new event for Lisa it’s still a bit of learning curve but she continues to adapt exceptionally well. Lisa is extremely excited about the final and looking forward to the challenge.

The other two Kiwi women are equally excited about their A final on Saturday. Teneale Hatton and Rachael Dodwell’s third place in the K2 500m semi final in a time of 1:45.829 was 2 seconds behind the winning German crew and just 0.4 seconds behind the Austrians. This pair tends to be stronger in the latter half of the race, but they kept up with the pack through the first half and put in their trademark strong finish to hold on to third. This puts them in the top 9 in the world – an impressive achievement for a crew that has been together for less than a year.

Ben Fouhy, who has been struggling with recovery from a from a bout of viral bronchitis which hospitalised him during training in Czech two weeks ago, finished at the back of the pack in both his heat and semi final races.

Racing tomorrow will feature Scott Martlew’s A final race in the LTA K1 200m which promises to be a nail biter, and the heats of the Mens K4 1000m and Womens K1 200m, Lisa Carrington’s favoured event.
