Gaze on Gaza: photo exhibition at Thistle Hall

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 30 AUGUST 2013

Gaze on Gaza

An exhibition of Julie Webb-Pullman’s photographs taken between 2011 and 2013, enhanced by selected photographs by other Palestinian photographers, opens on Monday 02 September at Thistle Gallery in Upper Cuba Street, Wellington.

This exhibition directs the public gaze to many facets of life in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Described in 2010 by then United Nations Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief John Holmes as an “open-air prison,” the Gaza Strip is once more virtually closed to the world, the brief respite resulting from the opening of the Rafah crossing after the Egyptian Revolution quickly smothered by the July 3 2013 military coup, and subsequent closure of the tunnels and the Rafah Crossing by the Egyptian military regime.

Gazans are again incarcerated, struggling to survive in a situation Holmes warned would be unsustainable if the tunnels were closed.

“Gaza would have difficulty surviving if Egypt succeeds in blocking them because they are a conduit for badly-needed food, medicine and commercial goods,” he said in March 2010 when warning of an impending humanitarian disaster.

That moment has arrived.

From the activities of daily life to confrontations with death, this exhibition highlights the spirit of a people who remain defiant and determined in the face of the crippling Israeli siege, the closure of their tunnel lifelines, and constant brutal military offensives.
