Final weeks for California Design at Auckland Art Gallery

It’s your last chance to see the major touring exhibition, California Design 1930-1965: Living in a modern way, at Auckland Art Gallery before it finishes on Sunday 29 September. With over 250 objects including graphic design, furniture, fashion, architecture, jewellery, ceramics it’s easy to see why everyone’s talking about the mid-century look.
September highlights:
• Tues Sept 10, Open Late 6-9pm: Soul songstress Tyra Hammond features in our final Open Late with a talk from leading broadcaster, Wallace Chapman – Tickets $20 and under, food and drink available on the night
• Sun 15 Sept – we have two fantastic talks:
Patrick Reynolds at 1pm - Well known for his architectural and interior photographs, Patrick Reynolds discusses acclaimed American architectural photographer Julius Shulman, whose work helped communicate California’s mid-century modernism to the world.
Dick Frizzell at 3pm - Trained at Ilam School of Fine Arts, Dick Frizzell worked in advertising for many years and produced best-selling print Mickey to Tiki. Join Dick for his response to 20th-century advertising.
• Sun 22 Sep at 1pm: The Wellington Architectural Centre launched New Zealand Design Review in 1948, addressing topics from furniture to church design, book binding and architecture. Join design historian Christopher Thompson for an overview of this influential publication.
• Sat 28 Sep – 1pm: San Francisco-based jeweller and craft gallery director, Mike Holmes knew many of the jewellers featured in California Design. Join Mike for a talk on work by Margaret De Patta and other modernist jewellers. Courtesy of Objectspace and Creative NZ.
• Sun 29 Sep – 12 – 2pm:Meet avid Barbie collector Patsy Carlyle, who owns New Zealand’s largest collection of boxed Barbies
• Enjoy a ‘California Design Bite’ for lunch and take in a 15-minute talk every Wednesday to Saturday at 1pm, free with exhibition entry
• If you’re looking for gift ideas don’t forget to check out the California Design pop-up shop, pop in to get a piece of California.
• This is the last month the Gallery Café is offering its limited-edition California Design menu, grab a San Jose Sloppy Joe and top it off with a Pasadena Pumpkin Cheesecake.
