Renowned Expert Joins APO for Mozart Masterpiece
Three great works of the Classical era meet one of the world’s great conductors of the Classical repertoire on 12 September for Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s Choral Masterpieces concert.
French-Canadian maestro Bernard Labadie, Music Director of Les Violons du Roy and La Chapelle de Québec, makes his APO debut conducting Haydn’s driving Symphony No.26 ‘Lamentation’ and the same composer’s Cello Concerto No.1.
Cellist for the concerto is Alban Gerhardt, whose latest recording of Britten was recently nominated in the concerto category of the 2013 Gramophone Awards.
The centrepiece of the evening, and the choral masterpiece of the concert’s title, is Mozart’s Requiem. It is a work Labadie knows well, and his recording with Les Violons du Roy and La Chapelle de Québec on the Dorian label has received extensive critical praise.
Taking the four solo roles are Australians Nicole Car (soprano) and Paul McMahon (tenor), ex-pat Kiwi mezzo-soprano Sarah Castle, and the award-winning German baritone Stephan Loges. The acclaimed group Voices New Zealand, led by its director Dr Karen Grylls, is the choir.
“Mozart’s Requiem has intrigued and enchanted listeners for more than 200 years; there’s a good reason it’s a staple of the concert hall,” says Barbara Glaser, Chief Executive of Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. “That’s why it’s exciting to have Bernard Labadie conducting. He is an internationally acknowledged master of this repertoire, and I’m certain he will bring a fresh perspective to a work we all know and love.”
