Goddess & Storyteller featuring Nicolas Isherwood
GODDESS AND STORYTELLER
Sun, 1 Sep 2013- 4pm
Hunter Council Chamber
Victoria University, Wellington.
From the concert halls of La Scala and Covent Garden, renowned US bass-baritone Nicholas Isherwood journeys to New Zealand to perform with STROMA in a concert featuring the work of Greek composer IANNIS XENAKIS and Chinese/NZ composer GAO PING.
The raw power of Xenakis's LA DÉESSE ATHENA and KASSANDRA are softened by the vibrant colours and lyrical brilliance of Gao Ping's SHUO SHU REN — THE STORYTELLER. Composer-in-Residence Dorothy Ker will also feature with a work for eleven musicians.
A leading master of contemporary vocal repertoire, Isherwood’s recent roles include "Lucifer" in the world premieres of Stockhausen’s Montag, Dienstag, and Freitag from Licht at La Scala and in Donnerstag aus Licht at Covent Garden.
Isherwood has sung in the world's leading opera houses; including the Royal Opera House, Frankfurt and Stuttgart and Théatre des Champs Elysées. Singing in festivals across Europe, he has worked with conductors such as William Christie, Peter Eötvös, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Helmuth Rilling, David Robertson, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky and Arturo Tamayo.
Isherwood collaborated with Karlheinz Stockhausen for 23 years, singing numerous world premieres and he has worked closely with composers such as Sylvano Bussotti, George Crumb, György Kurtág, Olivier Messiaen and Iannis Xenakis. He has improvised with Steve Lacy, Joelle Léandre, David Moss and Sainkho Namtchilak. He has recorded for labels such as Erato and Harmonia Mundi. An active pedagogue, he has taught master classes at schools such as the Paris Conservatoire, Musikhochschule Köln, Salzburg Mozarteum and Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi. His book Techniques of Singing, will be published by Bärenreiter Verlag next year.
