On September 13th and 14th, New Zealand String Quartet celebrates composer Benjamin Britten's centenary with concerts at the Hunter Council Chamber. In this atmospheric venue, the quartet players can speak to the audience directly, sharing their insights into the man and his music. One great Britten quartet will form the centrepiece of each concert, but the players will demonstrate how Britten's music is inspired by the other works they will also present: quartets by Purcell, Mozart, Schubert, Ravel, Bridge and Stravinsky. Inheritor and preserver of a great English musical tradition, Britten's vivid imagination was also expanded by the rhythms and imagery of poetry through the ages.

Altogether the two concerts offer an informal way for audiences to get to know both the players and their music better.
"We look forward to illuminating the genius of Britten through the myriad of textures, colours, and musical languages which were a vital influence on him," says Rolf Gjelsten, cellist.

"We hope that the music chosen will delight and inspire even the most seasoned concert goers."

The concert is part of a tour from late August to mid September that takes New Zealand's favourite chamber musicians to seven cities around New Zealand and is being presented in a range of accessible venues that promise welcoming and intimate experiences for all.
