Elke Finkenauer & Sean McDonnell: A Place in the World
17 August – 29 August
Opening in the Main Gallery
Saturday 17 August 3 – 4.30pm
Elke Finkenauer’s works are inspired by New Zealand domestic gardens, a place of expression, contradictions and joie de vivre. In her
practice she explores the language of drawing in the expanded field. She is particularly interested in line, gesture,
surface and process.
Sean McDonnell’s works are based on the common themes of life, death, and the frailty of life, conveyed through forms and motifs such as
hearts, skulls, clouds and flowers. His works are visual questions to himself and by making his thoughts visual he hopes
to navigate his way toward a place of understanding.
Through their practices each artist attempts to understand their place in the world. They reflect on aspects of human
nature and ponder impossible questions such as what it means to be human. Their works are sites of contemplation – they
are attempts at understanding, whilst also being acknowledgements that understanding is a state of constant flux.
Cynthia McKenzie: Spanish Steps
17 August – 29 August
Opening in the Outerspace Gallery
Saturday 17 August 3 – 4.30pm
Following her recent trip to Spain, Cynthia McKenzie has created a body of work inspired by the famous pilgrimage, El
Camino de Santiago, the Way of St. James.
Cynthia’s 12 pastel landscapes and scenes represent what touched her along the Way of St. James. Her 12 paintings
acknowledge the 12 Stations of the Cross; they are a reference to the history of the pilgrimage. Her journey was about
reflection and contemplation, where the walking mirrored the internal journey as well as the physical steps. Memory has
played a key part in the creation of Cynthia’s work; her paintings express the wonderful experience she had, both
physically and spiritually.
