Kiwi Greyhound has tongues wagging in Australia
As the All Blacks ready themselves for another trans-Tasman showdown, a Kiwi greyhound from Christchurch is set to take
it to the Aussies on the racetrack.
This Saturday, 3 year old Clone Your Own lines up against some of Australia’s finest greyhounds when he contests the G2
Victorian State Final in Melbourne. Should he achieve a first or second placing he will do something no other Kiwi
greyhound has done before - qualify for the prestigious G1 Australian National Sprint Championships.
For keen followers of Clone Your Own, a victory on Saturday wouldn’t come as a surprise. In May, Aussie race goers were
left red faced when he took out the lucrative Harrison Dawson Final at Sandown in a tight race, pocketing A$100,000 - by
far the biggest ever stake snared by a Kiwi Greyhound.
Alison Lee, Clone Your Own’s Christchurch-based owner, said that there seemed to be no end to the dogs record breaking
exploits.
“It’s quite unbelievable really. Since he arrived in Melbourne back in March he has shown that Kiwi greyhounds really
can foot it with the best in Australia.
“Qualifying for the Sprint Nationals is the big one of course. He just takes everything in his stride and we are really
proud of his achievements and what he is doing for New Zealand greyhound racing!”
Contesting the Australian National Sprint Championships would cap a remarkable career for Clone Your Own. In his
previous 30 races he has claimed 15 victories and his rich vein of form has seen him win six out of his last eight
races.
TAB bookie Mark Stafford said that Clone Your Own’s deeds had turned some heads.
“It’s hard to overstate his accomplishments really. He’s the Kiwi four-legged Usain Bolt and his record across the ditch
is unmatched for a Kiwi. I haven’t seen anything like it before – Kiwis ought to tune in and see for themselves what he
can do.”
The G2 Victorian State Final will be broadcast on TAB TV at 11.42pm Saturday 17th August.
