Ariana Tikao a finalist in the Waiata Maori Awards 2013
Ariana Tikao – Biography
Ariana (Kai Tahu/Ngati Kahungunu) is a finalist in the Waiata Maori Awards 2013, in two categories: Best Māori Pop Album
and Best Māori Female Solo Artist.
“I am looking forward to being at the Awards night in Hastings in September, as it is a great chance to see everyone
involved in Maori music together in one place, and celebrating people’s achievements” said Ariana.
Ariana released her third solo album last year ‘From Dust to Light’, and has a song ‘Kua whakawa’on the recent
complilation Tatou Tatou e 3 produced by Auckland’s Kog Studio.
“The song on Tatou Tatou e is quite a different waiata for me, in that it is mostly spoken word and has a more ‘urban’
feel, but it is fun to keep moving in different directions musically, particularly since I have been doing it for so
long now!” Ariana said.
Ariana will be accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Ben Wood this Sunday 18th August at the Christchurch Folk Music
Club. They are looking forward to playing again in Ariana's home town, at the very club where 20 years ago Ariana
started playing music with Jacquie Walters and Leigh Taiwhati as Pounamu.
Since then, Ariana has had a successful solo music career (with 3 solo albums), has played in other groups such as
Emeralds and Greenstone, and collaborated with luminaries such as Dr Richard Nunns and Leyton (Epsilon Blue, Rotor +),
Paddy Free and video artist Louise Potiki Bryant.
Ariana has recently returned from a whirlwind tour of France where she performed for the opening of France’s first Maori
Garden,’Te Putake’ in the Moselle District, and collaborated with flamenco guitarist, Juanito Fuentes in Brittany. Door
sales only. $15 folk club members/$20 non-members.
Doors open at 7pm.
