Burger Blogger Bites into Bucket List
Pete Watson is set for the burger experience of a lifetime as he tastes 17 gourmet burgers in 17 days, created by top local chefs as part of the Burger Wellington competition, presented by Garage Project.
Watson was chosen from among more than 100 hopefuls vying for the chance to eat their way through a personal ‘bucket list’ of entries. Wellingtonian Peter will enjoy a burger from his list for each of the 17 days of the Visa Wellington On a Plate food festival (9 – 25 Aug), blogging about his experience at VisaWellingtonOnaPlate.com.
As an avowed burger fan, Watson is excited by the literally mouth-watering opportunity;
“No food provides a more visceral, primal experience than a lovingly crafted burger eaten handful by succulent handful, mouthful by heart-swelling mouthful.”
Those concerned for Watson’s nutrition can take heart. The Burger Wellington entries in his list include patties that range from traditional beef, to venison, duck and tarakihi. Veges even get a look in with salad fillings as diverse as radish slaw, kimchi and pickled beetroot.
Considering he will be reviewing such a variety of burgers, Watson plans to keep an open mind, but there is one burger he’s especially looking forward to:
“Without question the thought of The Larder's Dough and Deer makes my heart swell. Offal in a bun? Yes please, vicar.”
The aim of the blog is to have some fun while providing an authentic perspective, says Visa Wellington On a Plate Festival Co-director, Sarah Meikle.
“We wanted to showcase a reviewer with a fresh outlook who was a genuine burger lover. The festival is all about connecting the people of Wellington with the amazing produce and chefs in our region. Burger Wellington and Pete’s blog are at the heart of that idea.”
For his part, Watson is looking forward to the opportunity to balance a little personal ledger.
“I am massively
indebted on the date front to my gorgeous girlfriend and,
quite frankly, seventeen burgers is probably the least I
could do.”
