Dad Jokes: “True Love”
A five track EP from Cellar-dweller punk duo Dad Jokes
It’s been a while since Arcade Recordings have put something out; fear not though – the boutique label is alive and kicking and have just released Auckland duo DAD JOKES second EP – available now on cassette and for download.
Committing time away from any real form of natural light by recording their follow up to Everybody Hates Dad Jokes, the dynamic duo of Matthew Wall and Ian Brown (not of Stone Roses fame) recorded their five-track EP with Rohan Evans (the brains behind Arcade Recordings), with mastering undertaken by Tom Anderson.
The result is a lo-fidelity slice of punk that at times is the sludgier side of acts such as Thee Oh Sees, The Reatards and The Gun Club – all artists Matt and Ian count as influences.
Born in 2011, Dad Jokes were brought together by their shared love of drinking bargain bin beer, eating pepperoni pizza, being jerks and bad jokes. Some of those interests may explain why Ian was kicked out of Canada and banished to the ends of the earth (Karangahape Road in this instance).
A band that aren’t saddled with delusions of “making it big” nor the pretention that goes along with that mentality, the formula of Dad Jokes was so simple and so effective that the recording process itself didn’t need to be complicated. Just two nights tracking in Whammy and Wine Cellar, and Arcade Recordings captured them perfectly.
Regular gig goers and for many of the Wine Cellar-scene “fun guys to hang out with”, Dad Jokes is a bit of fun in a sometimes too serious Auckland music scene.
Arcade Recordings is Rohan Evans' personal imprint documenting the countless, unforgettable acts that have passed through the iconic Wine Cellar and Whammy Bar.  Originally a CDR project, Arcade released 3 inch CDR’s around 2006 of Golden Krone, Sam Hamilton and The Broken Heatbreakers.
Falling out of love with CDR and finding vinyl prohibitively expensive, Arcade Recordings adopted a tape/digital model which first came into play with the release of Thom Burton;s (Wilberforces) “Moppy” project. Mokai, with its erratic, electro pop, was the first and almost the last release in this format. Until now…
Not only is the release of “True Love” a cause for celebration but Arcade Recordings have entered a partnership with Auckland based independent label MUZAI Records – continuing MUZAI’s longstanding association with the fine folk (some might say “family”) who work and frequent the St Kevin’s Arcade haunt.
