Industry experts set to select New Zealand’s best young creative talent
Kiwi Fashion Designer Ingrid Starnes, joins wearable art guru Fifi Colston and AUT Head of Department (Fashion & Textiles), Andreas Mikellis on the esteemed judging panel for the 2013 Youthtown Creatifs Young Designer Awards.
Youthtown is excited to announce this year’s line-up, which brings expertise across fashion design and editorial, wearable art and craft as well as incorporating some of AUT’s most promising fashion and design honour students.
AUT Fashion Design alumni, and respected Fashion Designer, Ingrid Starnes, is one of the big names on the panel bringing strong industry experience and a personal interest in emerging fashion stars.
"I am really looking forward to this as it is always so wonderful to see great young New Zealand talent coming through," Starnes said.
She is joined by award-winning wearable art designer and teacher, TV Presenter and author, Fifi Colston, who will judge the AUT Wearable Art Award category.
A veteran of the World of Wearable Art (WOW) award shows, with 18 entries since 1995, Colston is passionate about developing young creative talent, and leapt at the chance to be involved in these Awards.
"Enthusiastic young artists come through my workshops regularly, so to be part of a competition that encourages and recognises this inspirational new talent and creative thinking is really exciting,” Colston said.
Completing the judging panel is AUT Head of Department (Fashion & Textiles), Andreas Mikellis, Girlfriend magazine Fashion Editor Louise Logan, Sarah Burren, renowned costume designer, Ana Ivanovic-Tongue, Programme Manager of Public Art at Auckland Council, and two of AUT’s most promising fashion honours students.
In the AUT Fashion Design Award category, judges will be on the lookout for garments that embrace fashion trends but also express individual style both on paper and on the body.
For the AUT Wearable Art Award category, judges will be looking for masks that represent the entrant’s identity. This category encourages entrants to be creative, thoughtful of materials used and to construct something that inspires and surprises.
The public also get a chance to have their say in 2013 through the Girlfriend People’s Choice Award voting application due to launch on the Creatifs Facebook page in September.
Six finalists in each category will be revealed online with the public encouraged to vote for their favourite for a chance to win. This also allows finalists from both categories to share their achievements with friends, family and their school.
Registrations for the Youthtown Creatifs Young Designer Awards close on Friday 23 August 2013. Physical entries must be received by 5pm, Friday 6 September.
Entry forms can be downloaded at www.youthtowncreatifs.org.nz. Or visit www.facebook.com/YouthtownCreatifs
