Fringe Favourites Set to Debut in New Zealand
Bootleg Comedy Presents:
Grow Up/ I’m High On Life: What Are You On?
Two of Australia’s coveted comediennes embark on a tour across the East Coast of Australia, including their cousins in the “far east” – New Zealand.
Having performed at Comedy and Fringe festivals across the world, New Zealand audiences can now experience their award winning one woman shows, as Andrea Gibbs and Bonnie Davies bring Grow Up and I’m High On Life: What Are You On? to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch from September 14th.
Andrea Gibb’s Grow Up recalls her childhood in Allnutt Street – a place where children ride wild on BMX bikes, where backyard Olympics are created and where Andrea’s dad breathed like back into a sausage dog using mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Prompted by threats from her mother that she’d sell her things on ‘the eBay’, Andrea’s return prompts her to discover more about herself than expected.
Brutally honest, charting childhood victories and catastrophes through teenage diaries, family anecdotes, home videos and letters to boyfriends, Grow Up is a story from the “quintessential cousin from the country” – as Andrea Gibbs can boast well received performances in New York, Canada, Boston and naturally across Australia.
“Gibbs is simply superb” – The Guardian Express
“One of the most exciting, funny, unique and talented comic performers I’ve had to good fortune to stumble upon” – Tim Minchin
Selling out during its season at the Fringe World Festival in 2012 and winning the festival’s “Best Comedy” award, I’m High On Life: What Are You On? by Bonnie Davies is a beautifully compelling true story of a child who grew up surrounded by drug addicts, chaos and hugs. An honest, funny and heartbreaking tale, this is a unique story of growing up with two youth worker parents in a house where the door wasn’t to keep people out – it was to keep people in.
Having debuted her first solo show Laugh Or Your Money Back at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Wild West Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe in 2011, she received critical acclaim across Australia for her first work. I’m High On Life: What Are You On? deviates from the stand-up format many have become accustomed to, making audiences both laugh and cry.
“Despite the often dark, and at times hilarious material, Bonnie is delightful; she charms you with her open and honest presence…” – The Yorker, Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2012
Not simply comediennes but expert storytellers, Gibbs and Davies’ limited performances in New Zealand are simply not to be missed. Book now to avoid disappointment and revel in wondrous worlds of two of Australia’s new, sensational performers.
