New intern for Canterbury Cultural Collections Recovery Centre
The Friends of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and OMV New Zealand have partnered with Te Papa’s National
Services Te Paerangi to fund an internship at the new Canterbury Cultural Collections Recovery Centre (CCCRC), based at
the Air Force Museum of New Zealand.
Moya Sherriff will work at the CCCRC for a year under National Services Te Paerangi’s Museum Graduate Internship
Programme. Moya is a Cantabrian, and her passion for Christchurch and its cultural well-being will be invaluable in her
new role.
The CCCRC was set up following the devastating Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, during which many museum
buildings in Canterbury were damaged or destroyed. The Air Force Museum is donating space and facilities in its new
extension to house the CCCRC for a period of three years. Moya will be a valuable asset to the CCCRC, assisting in the
effort to store, conserve, and catalogue the collections of displaced museums around the region.
Moya Sherriff is enthusiastic about engaging with Canterbury’s museums. ‘What I am most looking forward to is the
opportunity to help these museums move themselves and their communities forward after the catastrophes Canterbury has
faced. Another draw is the opportunity to learn from my colleagues at the Air Force Museum and further afield. I am also
very excited by the chance to work with such a wide variety of collections.’
Gordon Shroff, President of the Friends of Te Papa, says ‘The Friends of Te Papa are deeply impressed by the efforts
underway at the Air Force Museum to store, catalogue, and conserve cultural items from collections displaced by seismic
damage. We’re delighted to be helping fund an intern to assist with this welcome and worthwhile project.’
