Australia feels pressure to ‘Say I Do’
Pressure is rising against politicians to accept equality and legalise same-sex marriage in Australia.
Earlier this month Fashion Designer and Entrepreneur, Annah Stretton launched ‘Come on Oz, Say I Do’; a campaign designed to encourage our Australian neighbours to follow New Zealand’s lead and ‘Say I Do’ to same-sex marriage.
On September 7th Stretton will be hosting a live gay wedding for two lucky Australian brides on the catwalk of New Zealand Fashion Week.
The campaign was launched just a fortnight before the UK celebrates a tremendous achievement for marriage equality.
On Tuesday the House of Commons in London agreed to amendments to legislation made in the House of Lords, removing the final barrier to the marriage equality reform becoming law.
Same-sex marriages are now permitted in the UK, New Zealand, Canada, thirteen US states and thirteen other countries. The only other developed, English-speaking country other than Australia that does not yet allow same-sex marriages is Ireland.
Australian Marriage Equality national convener, Rodney Croome believes the amendments will have a dramatic impact on the debate in Australia.
“It’s now up to Australia’s political leaders to follow the example set in Britain and co-operate to achieve this inevitable and important reform.”
“Because of the very close ties between Britain and Australia I expect to see a large number of Australians tying the knot under the new UK law.”
The Queen is expected to give the marriage equality law royal assent later this week and same-sex marriages will begin in mid-2014.
