Toi tipu Toi rea: New funding initiative for emerging Māori artists – applications close 26 July 2013

Creative New Zealand is introducing a new funding initiative, Toi tipu Toi rea, to support emerging Māori artists.

Under this initiative, funding will be set aside for each of Creative New Zealand’s Quick Response funding rounds to support Māori artists or practitioners seeking to undertake a project at an early stage of their career.

“Creative New Zealand is introducing new initiatives to better support Ngā Toi Māori following our Māori arts review and consultation with the sector last year,” says Haniko Te Kurapa, Creative New Zealand’s Māori Arts Funding Manager.

“One of our areas of focus is providing funding and development opportunities to Māori artists and practitioners at an early career stage.”

All eligible artists who submit an application to Te Waka Toi for a Quick Response grant will be considered for the Toi tipu Toi rea (emerging Māori artist) grant.

Up to four Toi tipu Toi rea grants of up to $7,500 each may be offered in any one Quick Response Grant round. Applications for the next funding round close on Friday 26 July 2013.

Creative New Zealand defines an ‘emerging artist’ as an artist who has achieved some success with at least one, and no more than four, public exhibitions, publications or performances. They do not need to have a track record of Creative New Zealand funding.

Creative New Zealand Quick Response Grants are offered three times a year (February, July and October). The maximum that can be applied for is $7,500.

The term ‘Toi tipu Toi rea’ derives from an old mōteatea, and more recently, a whakatauākī by Sir Apirana Ngata: “E tipu, e rea” (“Grow up, tender young shoot”). These words encourage new growth to strive – for pēpi, rangatahi, and emerging artists.
