APO Cuts Loose for Proms
Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) invites Aucklanders to unfurl their Union Jacks, don their red, white and blue
bowler hats and burst in to ‘Rule Britannia’ in honour of Qantas Presents the Last Night of the Proms, an evening of music where orchestral conventions – and decorum – are abandoned, and where audience participation is
not only allowed, it’s expected.
The 11 July concert is a showcase of all things British, and features popular music by composers including Elgar,
Vaughan Williams, Britten and Gilbert and Sullivan.
The latter pair is represented by selections from The Pirates of Penzance and Iolanthe. These will be sung by Helen Medlyn, the recent recipient of an MNZM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours and long a
favourite of APO concertgoers for her unrivalled ability to rouse an audience.
On the podium for the evening is award-winning conductor Benjamin Northey.
With other Last Night of the Proms staples including the ‘Sailor’s Hornpipe’, ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘Land of Hope and Glory’,
this is a night to cut loose and celebrate the best of British orchestral tradition.
