On changing the world for the better
The guest this week In Conversation with Noel Cheer on Face Television declares that his adopted country, New Zealand,
is a country of geniuses. He contrasts us with Australia by conceding that, while Australia is a “lucky” country, New
Zealand is the “clever” country.
Sir Ray Avery's life story is a rags-to-at-least-comparative-riches story. It’s a Pygmalion story too – lifted from the
gutter to the science lab and then on to philanthropic entrepreneurship. And it’s about giving to others in need some
of the good fortune that he has received.
At the end of his autobiography he has printed a poem by Steve Jobs – the late genius of Apple Computers. Jobs ends his
poem: “ … the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones that do.” Sir Ray dedicates
his autobiography to such crazy people.
