Move over vampires, history is repeating itself!
Gone are the days of Xena Warrior Princess and Hercules – or are they?
The next trend is set in motion with the production of a new hit theatre show, The Odyssey, and a hotly anticipated teen read, Murder at Mykenai. It seems the New Zealand arts scene is breathing fresh life into the old mythological stories!
New Zealand emerging author, Catherine Mayo, has written a compelling new young adult novel that propels the reader into their favourite Greek heroes’ teenage years! Daggers, betrayal, murderous kings, assassination, treacherous spies – who can you trust?
“Up till now, no one has written about Odysseus and Menelaos as teenagers,” says Mayo. “I found a whole new layer of myth and story waiting to be revealed!”
In true Classical fashion, Murder at Mykenai is being launched with a chariot race - or as close to one as we could get! Media are invited to share a glass of Mykenai Estate’s “The Blood of Atreus” red, view Odysseus’s sword and watch ‘The Bronze Age Stakes’ at the Trots at Alexander Park, Friday 28th June. The event starts at 5.45pm. Please contact Cath or Emma for more details.
Mayo is poised to make a name for herself across the ditch but her history is rooted right here in New Zealand. She grew up in Auckland and studied many things at Auckland University – history, philosophy, geology, French, music, performance violin and art history – before life took an unexpected turn and she beganan apprenticeship in violin making and restoration. About 10 years ago she started writing, urged on by the stories and dreams that filled her head since she was a child. She has since won several prizes in short story competitions. Murder at Mykenai is her first book. With rave reviews from NZ literary greats including Tessa Duder, this author is one to watch!
