ECC Student Craft/Design Awards

Calling all tertiary design students and recent graduate. Here’s your chance to enter these prestigious annual awards hosted by Friends of The Dowse; first prize is $3000.  Previous winners have included Genevieve Packer who has these words for students consider entering: “Do it! There are not many local awards (if any) tailored specifically to student-based craft / design, yet allowing for broad interpretation and application within this. Especially if the work has already been created – not to enter is a huge wasted opportunity.” She says winning the SCDA in 2008 helped her career, “With the award came valuable recognition of the strength of the design, outside of the course context – the work holding its own ground outside the confines of a brief and an institution. My wallpaper design subsequently went on to be picked up and commercially produced by Pacific Wallcoverings as part of their Pasifika range.”  Image of Genevieve attached. Kobi Bosshard 15 June – 13 October 2013 | FREE | Objectspace Masters of Craft Serie

Kobi Bosshard is widely regarded as 'the grandfather' of New Zealand contemporary jewellery. This stunning exhibiton features a selection of his jewellery from the 1960s to the present; works loaned from public and private collections around New Zealand and overseas. Born in Switzerland in 1938, Kobi trained as a goldsmith as did his father and grandfather. In 1966, he came to New Zealand where he worked as an alpine guide. He established Fluxus (with Steve Mulqueen) in 1983 and continued working as a full-time jeweller up until his semi-retirement in 2001. Full details on The Dowse website. Images attached

Homesewn: Original New Zealand Fashion 10 August – 24 November 2013 | FRE

Curated by Doris de Pont, New Zealand fashion designer and patron, Home Sewn is a retrospective of the home sewing revolution in New Zealand. At a time when off-the-peg fashion was scarce and expensive, home sewing provided many generations of women with a stylish wardrobe that reflected the current couture of the fashion capitals. Home Sewn is a touring exhibition from the New Zealand Fashion Museum.

"It is a defining characteristic of mid century New Zealand that most women could sew and large numbers did so very skilfully," Douglas Lloyd-Jenkins.

The exhibition showcases an art form that is gaining renewed interest. It touches on the machines, the techniques, the patterns and the fabrics used to create beautiful clothes. Fashion illustrations, photographs, newspaper and magazine articles also feature in Home Sewn. Image attached.  More information.

Sorry I Am Out of Order 1 June – 15 September 2013 | FRE

This selection of works from The Dowse’s collection all suggest disruption of the usual order. In various ways they play up, act out and disturb us. Many of the works included in Sorry I Am Out Of Order are from a long-term loan to The Dowse by Wellington collectors Jim Barr and Mary Barr, demonstrating the spiky humour and playful contrariness that distinguishes their approach to collecting.

Kerrie Poliness: Big O 13 April – 28 July 2013

A series of giant black and white wall drawings by Melbourne artist Kerrie Poliness. Drawn directly onto the wall in marker pen, the works create vivid illusions of three dimensionality. To create the drawings, points around a circle must first be estimated. These points are used to create grids. The irregularities generate odd and distinctive distortions in the drawings, which are different every time they are made. Kerrie Poliness says that the three most important qualifications required to produce these works are the ability to understand the instructions in the manual, the ability to make accurate measurements and the ability to guess. The size of each version of Black O is variable, depending on the particular dimensions of the wall selected for the drawing

Alex Monteith: Big Wave Aotearoa 13 April – 28 July 2013 | FRE

Auckland artist Alex Monteith explores high performance surfing in this new video work. A collaboration with Doug Young and exponents of Aotearoa's Big Wave Surfing community.

"Big Wave Aotearoa demonstrates the relentless ambition and drive of high performance surfing and the endless search to ride the greatest wave of all," Emma Bugden, Curator.

Alex Monteith is a new media artist and academic whose work incorporates sound, performance, photography, film, video, kinetic and network components, while her practice explores the politics, freedoms and limits of consumer technology. Her large-scale works involve collaboration with specialists from outside the art-world including sheep-dog triallists and New Zealand racing motor-cyclists. No stranger to the surf community, for six years Monteith was a competitive surfer – she was the Irish National Women's champion in 2001 and represented Ireland in the 2002 ISA world surfing games in Durban, South Africa and the European Surfing Championships in 2001. She has also competed on the NZ national circuit.

Closing Exhibitions…

Myths, Monsters & Magical Things 9 March – 16 June 2013 | FRE

Discover bountiful beasts, fabulous fairies, elaborate elves and drowsy dragons in this new exhibition for children and their families. Featuring contemporary works that have myths, monsters, fantastical animals and magical creatures at their core, fairy tales and fables will take on a new light with characters inspired by a range of heroic journeys – from Maori taniwha to Irish leprechauns, Greek mythology to English legends.

Works range from jewellery to sculpture and painting to photography, drawn mainly from The Dowse Collection, by New Zealand artists: Lisa Reihana, Dave Copeland, Jane Dodd, Johnny Fraser Allen, Cliff Whiting, Hannah & Aaron Beehre, Edward Duant and Bob Gerrard; as well as Australian artist Louise Weaver's hand-crocheted golden bunny New Romantic (Golden Hare) and Indian painter Shanti Devi's The Bahagavad Gita.
