Music to savour – Duo Tapas AOTNZ tour 5-19 July 2013
A guitar
and violin – and two attractive highly talented musicians
on stage – that’s Duo Tapas, formed in 2010 by Rupa
Maitra (violin) and Owen Moriarty (guitar) to showcase a
wide range of music - by turns flamboyantly energetic,
joyful or heart breaking - written or transposed for this
beautiful combination of instruments.
“…from composers like Vivaldi ….to music that is very folk influenced…music from all over the world…we choose our repertoire solely based on whether it is beautiful music that moves us,” the musicians say.
Much of the work is written by living composers, including those known to them such as New Zealander Anthony Ritchie, and Almer Imamovic, a guitarist and composer Owen came to know while studying in Los Angeles.
Duo Tapas released a debut album, Da Chara under the ODE label in 2012. See Duo Tapas Arts On Tour NZ itinerary below.
Rupa
Maitra
Rupa studied with Pamela Bryce at Otago
University where she completed a BMus in 1990, gaining
several prizes in performance and musicology. She was a
member of the Southern Sinfonia between 1986 and 1997,
including as principal second violin in 1994-97. Rupa plays
in a number of chamber groups in Wellington, is a member of
the first violin section of Vector Wellington Orchestra, and
directs the Wadestown primary school
orchestra.
Owen
Moriarty
Owen began his formal guitar studies in
1997 at Massey University, graduating in 2003 with a
Master’s degree in performance music and then moving to
the US in 2003 where he studied towards a Graduate
Certificate at the University of Southern California (Los
Angeles). Owen has toured five times with Chamber Music NZ,
twice as a soloist, twice as a member of Tango Virtuosi, and
lastly with the Wellington Guitar Duo. He has also given
performances in Australia, USA, Portugal, Mexico, Thailand,
Spain and the United Kingdom. Owen’s self-titled debut
(double) CD was released through ODE Records in 2003.

About Arts On Tour New
Zealand
Arts On Tour New Zealand (AOTNZ)
organises tours of outstanding New Zealand performers to
rural and smaller centres in New Zealand. The trust receives
funding from Creative New Zealand and liaises with local
arts councils, repertory theatres and community groups to
bring the best of musical and other talent to country
districts. The AOTNZ programme is environmentally
sustainable, bringing artists to audiences, rather than the
other way round. www.aotnz.co.nz
