Lakmania Spreads to Bay of Many Coves

Lakmania Spreads to Bay of Many Coves

June 5, 2013

The perfect duet to accompany the Bay Of Many Coves resort’s exciting opera weekend this month is Sous le dome epais from Lakme by Delibes.

The duet, immortalised by the late British movie director, Tony Scott, brother of Sir Ridley, received international prominence in a television commercial which he directed for British Airways nearly 30 years ago.

He’d originally used it in a vampire movie, The Hunger, starring Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon two years earlier and, liking it so much, decided it could be repeated on the small screen.

The commercial was so popular, that “Lakmania” spread across the world and now, in the 30th year of its reincarnation, it’s being sung at the superb Bay Of Many Coves in the Marlborough Sounds from June 14-16.

The Lakme duet has nothing to do with airlines, punctured necks or the TV series True Blood but describes the glory of nature. It’s all about flowers, jasmine and roses entwining, singing birds, the river’s current and shining waves, all features of the exotic resort.

Leading New Zealand sopranos, Morag McDowell and Emma Roxburgh, will perform the duet to the Bay Of Many Coves audience as part of three days of opera, operatic and musical theatre highlights.

Prices for the Opera At the Bay weekend at Bay Of Many Coves resort start from $860 per person.
