Internationally acclaimed relationships expert here to sharpen skills of professionals and couples
An internationally acclaimed relationships expert, Dr Rebecca Jorgensen, is coming to New Zealand in July, under the
auspices of Relationships Aotearoa, to train professionals in Emotionally Focused Therapy, run seminars on the
neurobiology of adult attachment, and lead workshops for couples wanting to renew, repair, and strengthen their
relationships.
“We’re very pleased to bring Dr Jorgensen to New Zealand,” says Cary Hayward, Clinical Director of Relationships
Aotearoa. “This is a great opportunity for couples and professionals to hone their skills with one of the best.”
Dr Jorgensen, a couples/family therapist with 20 years experience, is a director of the Training and Research Institute
for Emotionally Focused Therapy at Alliant International University and a director of LifeSTAR (sexual treatment and
recovery) of San Diego. She trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy with its founder, Dr Sue Johnson, has the highest
certification possible, and is one of only 12 qualified trainers in the therapy in the USA. She has run Emotionally
Focused Therapy is a clearly structured, evidence-based approach to couple counselling that focuses on improving the
dynamic within relationships.
“It is gaining lots of traction internationally because of its effectiveness within a short-time frame. In our work, we
see couples whose relationship is so tense, they are ready to call it quits. With this approach we can identify the
dynamics of the relationship, de-escalate the tension, and successfully address the needs of each partner. The
relationship gets much better often within a short time – and research shows that the changes are long-lasting,” says
Cary.
The courses will run in Auckland and Wellington in July.
Relationships Aotearoa is a not-for-profit organisation that each year helps some 30,000 individuals, couples, and
families make positive changes in their lives through its counselling, family/whānau services and community programmes.
Relationships Aotearoa has brought Dr Jorgensen to New Zealand several times since 2010. She is a dynamic presenter and
trainer, and her courses and workshops have been very well-received.
