Leadership: They Gotta Love you?
New Zealand Telecommunications Forum boss, David Stone, returns this week as part of the Leaders Review Key Moments TVC series currently playing on TV One, this time with his take on the classic leadership conundrum of popularity vs effectiveness.
“Not everyone’s going to love you...and you can’t bend like a straw in the wind,” says Stone.
As Stone points out, the more employees or wider stakeholders, the more unlikely everyone will be in accord with the leader’s take on a best approach, in turn leading to the old leadership chestnuts of loneliness at the top, and living with a constant lack of approbation - at least from some employees at any one time.
The solution lies does not lie, he asserts, in becoming a gratuitously, uncompromising so-and-so. Rather, bluntness, honesty, and “helping folks find their way to the middle,” is the key he says.
