Exploring ideas of economic and political isolation, FOREX: Outcomes from the Blue Oyster’s International Expeditions comprises moving image work, performance, text, and comprehensive documentation from SUPERMARKET, Stockholm and Art-Athina 18: Platforms, Athens.

In February 2013, The Blue Oyster Art Project Space took part in Stockholm’s independent art fair, SUPERMARKET. Dunedin-based interdisciplinary artist, Max Bellamy represented the Blue Oyster at the fair with a new video installation Come Rain; Come Shine. The work is comprised of two HD video loops; Under My Breath and Carriage (both 2013). Come Rain; Come Shine will be exhibited in New Zealand for the first time as part of FOREX.

Max travelled to Curio Bay in the Catlins to shoot the footage for the two videos. Come Rain; Come Shine is a character-based piece that follows Robyn James Hode's attempts to future-proof his life from an extremely remote location. Hode writes to dozens of multi-national corporations in the hope of finding an institution willing to help in his task of storing and securing his precious belongings. Exploring relative isolation in a world dominated by global actors with the power to reach anywhere in the earth, Come Rain; Come Shine can also be considered a response to the ongoing debate concerning the existence of a centre / periphery system in the art world.

In May, the Blue Oyster participated in Art-Athina 18: Platforms. Working with Wellington based collectives Letting Space and Loomio, as well as Athens-based curator Konstantinos Konstantidis and Dunedin-based Pieter Haydensieck the Blue Oyster presented Approaching Economic Immateriality.

Approaching Economic Immateriality consisted of two distinct, yet related facets linked by an interrogation of the free market, the art market, and their (elastic) limits. Equipped with paper currency ‘Art Creds’ - 200,000 were designed and minted by Pieter Haydensieck - a broker operated at the Blue Oyster stand. The broker took guidance and instruction on how to spend the Art Creds from an invited panel discussing the issue on decision-making software platform Loomio. Visitors to the Blue Oyster’s booth at Art-Athina were also able to take part in the online discussion, which revolved around how the Art Creds will be exchanged in Athens. The outcomes of Approaching Economic Immateriality – including the material and immaterial trade and exchange results – have been sent back to The Blue Oyster in Dunedin where they will be exhibited in FOREX.
