NZ Kayak Team Takes on the Second World Cup in Racice
After a satisfying start to their World Cup campaign the New Zealand Kayak Team left Szeged in Hungary to tackle the second ICF World Cup Regatta being held in Racice, Czech Republic this weekend.
First up on the block Friday morning (Czech time) will be Olympic Champion Lisa Carrington in a new distance for her, the K1 500m followed by the 200m on Saturday. She performed well in the first World Cup dominating all of her 200m races and taking out the win, so no doubt much is expected of her at this competition. But with the time margins in this event always very close Lisa will be working hard to maintain her lead with a slightly larger field.
Lisa will be followed by the women’s K2 crew of Teneale Hatton and Rachael Dodwell who face the 500m event at 9.35am. These girls performed above expectation in Szeged where they finished fourth in the A final and hope to paddle just as well at this regatta.
Ben Fouhy follows the women in the K1 1000m at 10.09am and will be pushing for an A final result this time round.
There will be two new men’s K2 crews competing later in the morning with the new pairings of Darryl Fitzgerald/Jasper Bats and Zac Quickenden/Jarrod Fitzgerald. As a K4 crew they secured a B final in the K4 1000m so it will be interesting to see how they perform in the doubles.
The gruelling 5000m races at the end of the day are being raced by Ben Fouhy and Teneale Hatton. Teneale’s second place in the first World Cup has left her raring to go and this is sure to be an exciting race!
