Titus: Shakespeare’s Most Acidic Work – On Acid!

Shakespeare’s Most Acidic Work – On Acid!

Fractious Tash and Q Theatre present
TITUS
Directed by Benjamin Henson
Starring David Sutherland, James Roque, Eli Matthewson, Jason Hodzelamns, Paul Lewis, Jason Wu and Cole Jenkins

Murder, revenge, rape and cannibalism; Shakespeare’s first ever tragedy is re-imagined for Generation X as Q Presents’ inaugural season brings a rapid fire version of Titus to audiences from May 29th. This is theatre like you’ve never imagined… and never will experience again…

In a barren wasteland where only brutality equates power, a tribe of scavengers clamber among the debris to find anything that will help them recount the story of a legend – Titus Andronicus and his mutilated daughter, Lavinia. In this lost boy’s fantasy of war and seduction, all repercussion is abandoned in a struggle for power – encapsulating the one thing we all know but fail to learn from – revenge is a childish pursuit.

Blood becomes oil, pies become cupcakes, masking tape dresses the wounds of the injured, and an unrelenting massacre of cuddly toys, Fractious Tash bringing a truly unique take on one of Shakespeare’s most macabre works. An all-male cast of just seven actors bring a condensed 90 minute version of Titus to Auckland audiences - firing on all cylinders at break-neck speed.

With a very limited season at UNITEC trialling the work and ultimately selling-out every night, Q Theatre’s new programme of bold works by emerging theatre artists was the perfect home for an exercise in theatre sacrilege. Titus leads the way as one of three productions chosen for a brave and exciting season of envelope pushing theatre.

Director Benjamin Henson trained as a director at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, London, and has directed productions in the United Kingdom, Germany and France, including touring shows to Edinburgh. Since arriving in NZ in 2011, Benjamin has directed, written and produced over 20 shows across Auckland and Wellington.
