Matt Horne announced as new Aces coach

Former Blackcap Matt Horne has been appointed as the new coach of the Auckland Aces.

Horne has been Auckland Cricket's network coach for the last four years and in that time has guided both the Auckland A and U19 side to national titles as well as taking charge of the New Zealand U19 side at the World Cup.

He also guided the Aces for the last portion of the 2012/13 season and was at the helm when they emerged victorious in the Ford Trophy.

Horne represented both the Blackcaps and Auckland in a highly successful career spanning 14 years. At the end of his playing days he moved straight into coaching, first at his old club Grafton United and then Papatoetoe, before joining Auckland Cricket as a network coach in 2009.

Paul MacKinnon, Manager of Auckland Cricket's High Performance Unit expressed his pleasure at the appointment.

"The Aces Coach is a key appointment within the Aces High Performance Unit and we're delighted that we've been able to select someone of such talent from within our own organization. Matt has really come through our systems in every respect, both coaching and playing, and we think that he's got what it takes to become a great coach at domestic level."

"Having worked with a wide range of people in his time at Auckland Cricket we think that Matt has a huge amount of respect with both players and the cricket community in Auckland that will stand him in great stead in the role."

His appointment continues the remoulding of the Auckland Cricket High Performance Unit that began with the appointment of MacKinnon, who came to Auckland Cricket from New Zealand Rugby's High Performance Unit.

The Aces position was something that Horne saw as the natural next step in his coaching career and is pleased that he can now get on with the job.

"Having that last part of the season in the role really gave me an idea of what the position is all about and confirmed for me that it's where I want to be, so I'm very glad to have got the nod. There's a winter of hard work ahead but I'm very much looking forward to getting stuck in and doing the groundwork to try and make next season a successful one for the Aces."

Horne will officially commence as Auckland Aces coach on June 1st.
