Circus Performance: ...with a stranger...
Circus Travels to Stranger Lands
The Dust Palace
presents
…with a stranger…
Following the success of Love and Money the acclaimed circus theatre company The Dust Palace return to Auckland with six of New Zealand’s finest circus performers for… with a stranger… playing at TAPAC from June 7th.
Strangers who put themselves in the most intimate of configurations. Lovers, who in the most intimate of situations are like strangers. The incalculable risk of falling for the girl who believes herself to be invisible. The broken angel of a man. The choices we make are irrevocable.
What happens when human nature is challenged by circumstance?
With a strong influences from the style of revered Montreal circus troupe Les 7 Doigts de la Main (The Seven Fingers of The Hand), The Dust Palace have created what they tout as “arthouse-circus”; a cabaret of short stories told in the striking language of carny.
New Zealand audiences are increasingly discerning when it comes to the art of circus and The Dust Palace aims to deliver a sophisticated experience that combines the electricity of the cabaret with the power of storytelling. Using their wealth of skills in aerial dance and circus acrobatics, combined with some serious acting skills … with a stranger… offers all the fun and adrenaline of a cabaret and all the heart of a well told story.
An original devised work … with a stranger… toys with the concept of duality as the series of short stories poses the question “are you a stranger or are you familiar with the things, places and people around you?” Armed with this provocation the troupe delves into the deep waters of humanity going far and beyond what bubbles on the surface.
With a repertoire that includes successful seasons of Love and Money, Venus Is … and Cirque Non Sequitur The Dust Palace have played to full houses and have have captured the attentions of not only theatre critic but the imagination and interests of the general public up and down the country.
So much so that The Dust Palace have recently opened up their practice space and developed a “schools” programme, allowing the ever growing popularity of circus-art in New Zealand to be taught to the general public – not only as a burgeoning recreational past-time but for the fitness properties also.
The star studded cast of this charged exploration of human nature includes familiar faces Mike Edward (Shortland Street) and Eve Gordon (The Almighty Johnsons) alongside respected names within New Zealand’s burgeoning circus scene; including Zach Washer (finalist, The Golden Carnie Awards 2013), Edward Clendon, Rochelle Mangan and Geof Gilson.
“superbly choreographed acrobatics featuring the finely muscled bodies and disciplined athleticism of highly trained performers.” - NZ Herald.
