Students Playing With Food
‘Food and You – Careers Experience Day’ is a fun filled, educational day where secondary students will learn about the range of careers in the agricultural industry and get an in depth look at the food chain supply story.
Organised by PICA (Primary Industry Capability Alliance), Food and You will be held at Kumeu Showgrounds in Auckland alongside the 2013 Grand Finals for the ANZ Young Farmer Contest, TeenAg, and AgriKidsNZ Competitions, Friday 17th May 10.00am – 3.00pm.
New Zealand has a reputation for producing high quality safe food, both competitively and sustainably. The potential for New Zealand is immense and talented people are an essential part of the development of the country’s largest export earner.
“The details for the process of food getting from the pasture to the plate are often overlooked”, commented Richard Fitzgerald, PICA Chairman, “as a result, the array of career options involved within the agriculture industry also often go unnoticed”, Mr Fitzgerald explained.
At Food and You students will gain an awareness of the food value chain and an understanding of the many career opportunities in the primary sector through hands on interactive sessions from industry leading organisations such as Fonterra, DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb NZ, FarmIQ, and AgResearch.
Each of the sessions will be themed and have links to a range of curriculum strands. Some of the topics include animal production, engineering, horticulture, machinery and food science.
Students will also be able to hear from a number of inspirational career speakers and meet with educators from Massey University, Lincoln University and Taratahi Training Centre.
“It is vital to support the youth of today in order to develop the agriculture industry of tomorrow”, said Mr Fitzgerald.
All are welcome to attend the day and watch the demonstrations, for more information or to register a school please email pica@youngfarmers.co.nz
