4 April 2013 - For Immediate Release

Next week’s inaugural HOPSTOCK festival will involve twelve of Wellington’s best craft beer bars celebrating Nelson’s 2013 hop harvest by serving eight unique beers all made with fresh hops. Most hops used in brewing are dried in order to preserve them, but by rushing some hops off the vine and straight into the kettle brewers are able to harness the pungent aromas and flavours of fresh hops. HOPSTOCK is organised by Craft Beer Capital, a collection of Wellington craft beer breweries, bars and bottle stores, and will take place at venues around the city on 10-12 April 2013.

The eight unique fresh hop beers, made by breweries in Wellington and the upper South Island, will be available exclusively in one or two bars for the three days. Drinkers will be able to follow a Trail Card showing them what is on offer and where. By collecting HOPSTOCK stamps from the participating bars, people will be able to enter a grand prize draw. The bars and beers involved are:

Bebemos and Bruhaus serving Mussel Inn Lawn Moa
D4 and Southern Cross serving Townshend Brewing and Liberty Brewing Oldham’s Tap Riwaka Pilsner
Fork & Brewer serving Fork & Brewer Hopstepper
Hashigo Zake serving Renaissance Fresh Hop Benelux Ale
Kelburn Village Pub and Sprig & Fern serving Golden Bear Greenstone Pacific
Hop Garden and Tap Haus serving 8 Wired Fresh Hopwired
Little Beer Quarter serving Townshend Brewing and Liberty Brewing Chatham’s Rise
Malthouse serving Tuatara Conehead.

Craft Beer Capital organiser Sean Murrie said “the aim of HOPSTOCK is to showcase Nelson’s wonderful hops and the big bold flavours of fresh hopped beers. Many people will not have tried a beer brewed with fresh hops before and now we are giving them an opportunity to try eight. The trail is also designed to encourage people to try quality bars they might not have gone to before. Craft Beer Capital is hugely confident this event will become an annual highlight on the Wellington calendar.”

HOPSTOCK is run over three days to ensure people can enjoy the fresh hopped beers responsibly.
