Installation artist pieces together Antarctic science and histories at Corban Estate Art Centre

Wellington installation artist Gabby O'Connor reconstructs the science and history of Antarctica through art. The artist is seeking support for exhibition costs to install her newest work, some time at Corban Estate Arts Centre, Auckland in May 2013.

some time is an alluring sculptural interpretation of the edge of the Antarctic Ross Ice Shelf at the point of collapse. This labor intensive installation is made from thousands of tissue paper sheets, hand dyed and cut into geometric shapes and manually assembled.

O’Connor’s Antarctic installation has been selected as one of the inaugural Boosted projects. Boosted is the only genuinely philanthropic crowdfunding website for creative projects in New Zealand recently established by the Arts Foundation. To kick off a series of free public programmes, O’Connor will give an artist talk on Wednesday 10 April in Wellington and also host two Auckland events. For further details see schedule below.

For this Antarctic installation series O’Connor is collaborating with NIWA Oceanographer, Craig Stevens. In an earlier work, What lies beneath (2011) at the City Gallery Wellington, the artist constructed the rarely seen submerged part of the Ross Ice Shelf that will eventually calve off icebergs containing the bodies of Robert Falcon Scott and his crew.

Since 1995 the artist has exhibited nationally and internationally in Japan, Canada, Holland, Australia and the UK and holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of New South Wales, College of Fine Arts.

ABOUT CORBAN ESTATE ARTS CENTRE
The Corban Estate Arts Centre (CEAC) is located at the historic Corban Winery Estate in Henderson, Auckland. The arts centre utilizes the historic winery buildings and is home to galleries which feature a changing programme of exhibitions, as well as a café, gallery shop, and artists’ studios. CEAC also offers a wide range of arts and cultural events and education programmes, including art classes for adults and children and a schools education programme. The centre is open 7 days a week, 10.30am – 4pm.
