Auckland, 20 March 2013 - Three stunning images by New Zealand photographers are today honoured in the New Zealand
National Award, part of the prestigious 2013 Sony World Photography Awards.
Seeking to uncover the best amateur and enthusiast photographers from across New Zealand, the winners and runners up of
the National Award are:
•Joshua Donnelly, Winner
•Peter Graney, 2nd place
•Cathy Franzoi, 3rd place
Up, Up and away – Turkish Style
Joshua Donnelly’s winning image, titled “Up, Up and away – Turkish Style”, is an image of Hot Air Ballooning in the Cappadocia region of Turkey. Despite pre-flight nerves, Joshua patiently
waited for the bright red Turkish balloon to drift into the centre of the frame creating a peaceful, dreamlike shot of
the balloons with the national emblem of Turkey over an amazing moonlike landscape. For Joshua it was the perfect
memento of a fantastic holiday.
Travelling and photography are life-long hobbies of Joshua Donnelly, who wishes he could become a full-time professional
travel photographer. Joshua is currently travelling in India and is planning on further trips this year to Singapore and
Burma. Talking about his win Joshua comments, “I am absolutely thrilled and honoured to win the New Zealand National
Award.”
The 2nd place image, “Chicken on wall” by Peter Graney, shows dead chickens starkly displayed on a wall for sale outside a traditional market in Phnom Penh,
Cambodia, and Cathy Franzoi, in 3rd place, captures three brothers, 12, 10 and 6 years old, sharing a two-seater couch
in “The Three Seater”.
As the winner of the New Zealand National Award, Joshua will receive $2000 world of Sony Digital Imaging equipment.
All three images will be showcased as part of the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at the famous Somerset
House, London from 26 April – 12 May.
