Rare art exhibition in the Capital
An exhibition of rare and fine art works, many of which have never been seen before other than in books and museum exhibitions, is being held in Wellington this week.
The exhibition is a preview for Wellington art lovers of works to be included in a forthcoming major auction to be held in Auckland later in the month. The artworks in the auction are worth up to two and a half million dollars, and come from all periods in New Zealand’s art history along with selected editions from international practitioners such as Andy Warhol and Jim Dine.
“What is exceptional is that several of the major Modernist period works have never been seen prior, other than in major public institutional exhibitions or in books. Collectors are presenting rare and major works at this time and have confidence in the state of the market”, says Director-Head of Fine Arts Sophie Coupland.
Webb’s auction house is based in Auckland, but wants to provide the Wellington arts community with the chance to view some of the works in the forthcoming auction.
“There is a gap in the art market in Wellington with most major art auctions held in Auckland, it is difficult for Wellington art lovers to engage with the works on offer. There is a strong history of collecting in Wellington and a large community of art collectors. Webb’s wants to connect with them in a more direct and immediate way than through published catalogues and on-line. There’s nothing like seeing the physical work.”
“We have had a great response from the Wellington arts community and art lovers wanting to attend the opening.”
The exhibition opening is being held this Thursday the 14th from 6 to 8 pm at The Young, 2/7 Hawker Street, Mt Victoria.
The public are also invited to attend. The exhibition is also open on Friday and Saturday for those who can’t attend the opening.
