Team Seagate Does It Again at the 2013 Godzone
Queenstown - Team Seagate has successfully defended their title with a scorching finish at the GODZone adventure race in Queenstown this morning.
The current Adventure Racing World Champion team led by Nathan Fa’avae, with Sophie Hart, Chris Forne and Trevor Voyce snared the 2013 title in just three days.
Race Director Adam Fairmaid says the team, who never lost the lead position over the entire 513km course, came into the event as the ones to beat and they were ready to take on anyone who challenged them.
“ This has been an extra ordinary result from Team Seagate who have given a faultless performance from day one. They were chased all the way by Team Harraways Oats who at times looked likely to threaten them but really Seagate had what it takes to win.
Coming across the finish line at Pinewood Lodge in Queenstown at 9.35 am the team were cheered down the finish chute by family, friends and followers and welcomed by GODZone Race Directors Adam Fairmaid and Warren Bates.
“Seagate came across the finish line about five hours ahead of our predictions and they truly deserve to walk away with the GODZone Champion trophy and the $10 000 dollar cheque for coming in first place,” says Adam. “They have also been crowned the New Zealand Adventure Racing Champions, which was open to all Kiwi racing teams and received an additional $3000.”
“ They clearly came into this race with one goal only and that was to win in superb form and impressed everyone with the speed and intensity of the pace, said Adam. “ Obviously Harraways Oats gave them a good run for their money and chased hard but Seagate’s skill and determination paid out in the end.”
Team Seagate leader Nathan Fa’avae refused champagne at the finish but had plenty to say about how hard the event had been.
“It was a tough course out there, some stunning areas but certainly in some ways more brutal than last year – at times we were really struggling. There was great pressure from behind and we felt we were just doing enough to claw through it. One of the big things was the heat - certainly in the middle of the day it was pretty taxing out in the open areas.”
On winning a second year in a row, Nathan was philosophical about their approach to GODZone.
“I guess with our team at the moment there is a challenge in finishing these races but probably the biggest challenge for us is finishing faster than the other teams so its good to come here with that goal and achieve it – we’re pretty tired now but its been a great adventure.
The team will now start planning for the World Adventure Racing Championship in Costa Rica at the end of the year.
“It was good to come and win again and this is the first race of the year for us, we have a couple to do in China and one in Brazil but the main focus is the World Champs in Costa Rica.
