Registration of Teams for Orion Health Godzone Adventure

The registration of 45 teams competing in this weeks Orion Health GODZone adventure race got underway in Queenstown today under sunny skies with plenty of anticipation for what lies ahead.

Pinewood Lodge in Queenstown is where the registration has taken place and the Lodge will also act as official race HQ during the week- long event. Race Director Adam Fairmaid says registration is the first step for the racers to get through and so far things have gone very smoothly.

“ Its been great catching up with everyone today, there are many adventure racers that we know and some new ones who are competing for the first time who I have to say look a bit nervous. Generally there is a lot of excitement and they are all keen to get into the back country and underway.”

The official registration process included teams being shown and taught how to use the Yellow Brick tracker; a GPS system that documents each teams location throughout the event.

“ The trackers are a crucial part of the teams kit and they have to carry them wherever they go. They will transmit a signal back to our HQ every 15 minutes and this then shows up on the live website so people at home can also follow their progress.

It’s incredible to watch as teams make their own decisions on navigation and what route to take between each checkpoint and many people at home will be riveted to all the action unfolding on their screens.”

Macpac are back as the official apparel sponsor for the 2013 GODZone race with officials and volunteers around the course wearing Macpac gear. Mr Fairmaid says the gear is perfect for the changeable conditions that the course may deliver.

“ Sponsorship like this is vital to adventure racing and the Macpac gear is durable, smart and really comfortable to wear in all sorts of conditions.”

Macpac director Campbell Junor says the Christchurch company is delighted to be involved with New Zealand’s premier expedition style adventure race.

“Macpac has been involved with adventure racing since the very beginning, so naturally we love the opportunity to work with the Godzone crew on such a well organised event. It should be a great race to watch- we’ve certainly got our own favourites to watch- Team Macpac will be battling it out at the pointy end, and Macpac Girls on Top always put in a huge performance too. We’ve got (Macpac ambassadors) Sam Clark and Jacob Roberts racing with Brazilia and Thule, and Natasha Trovato from our Palmerston store making her adventure race debut.”

The event gets underway early on Sunday morning and the start location will be revealed to teams tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon as they travel towards it. The first teams are expected to take three to four days to complete the 513km course and the slow teams six days.
