Anniversary Book Available Throughout Canterbury

When Country Comes to Town, a commemorative book charting the history of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association and annual Canterbury A&P Show, is now available to purchase at all Whitcoulls stores in Canterbury.

“It is fitting that Whitcoulls, a New Zealand owned bookseller founded 130 years ago, is stocking a book celebrating 150 years of the country’s largest Agricultural and Pastoral Show, design and printed by Christchurch’s iconic Caxton Press who celebrated 75 years in 2010” added Canterbury A&P Association President Richard Lemon.

The 224-page When Country Comes to Town hard cover book looks at the evolution of the Canterbury A&P Association, the notable citizens and hardworking families who have sustained and nurtured it through the highs and lows of its history, and the changing nature of the annual Canterbury A&P Show, which is the showcase of the farming industry nationwide.

Preface:
In 2012, the Canterbury A&P Association celebrated its sesquicentenary. That is, 150 years of agricultural and pastoral endeavour; 150 years of loyalty from its ever-changing roll-call of members and exhibitors, each one dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in farming practice in this region. The Canterbury A&P Association was founded in 1863, but its roots reach right back to the earliest, independent squatters on the Plains and the Peninsula, and the Canterbury pilgrims, all of whom saw the land, understood its promise and set about realising its worth. This book looks at the evolution of the Canterbury A&P Association, the notable citizens and hardworking families who have sustained and nurtured it through the highs and lows if its history, and the changing nature of the annual Canterbury A&P Show, which is the showcase of the farming industry nationwide.
