What would it look like if the folk music revival spread to photography?
Michael Edge-Perkins has answered that question in a series of still life and tableau photographs called These things
happen, to be exhibited at Matchbox Gallery in March. Although most known for his study of the younger Wellington and
Lyttelton folk musicians, he describes that as an inspiring distraction from his passion for still life. “I’ve declared
myself to be an independent folk photographer, and I am constantly finding out what that means.”
"Just as not everyone can write a folk song, not every picture is a folk photograph. I'm trying to work out what it
might mean to create a folk photograph, to be connected to the past in a way that is grounding and energising, rather
than just retro or recycled."
Event
Come in to Matchbox with some objects that are significant to you (even if you're not sure why) and we'll work together
to make a picture! More discussion of what sorts of objects could work is below.
Come back the following weekend to pick up your print and to see what other people have brought in.

What is a folk photo? What could I bring in?
The show is an experiment to find out if the idea of a folk photograph makes sense. By makes sense I don't mean by a
rational description of what is or isn't folk. We accept that there are such things as folk songs and folk art, even
though defining them is hard.
I suggest that we know it by its effect - helping people to feel warmly connected with the past and supported to face
the future. My aim is to see whether art photography can do the same thing - to speculate what it would look like if the
folk revival spread to photography.
I have developed a colour, light and composition approach that I think starts the discussion. Your responses to the
exhibition, especially the objects that you bring in for me to bring my approach to, will carry that discussion forward.
