BEFORE WOMAD
WOMAD 2013 heralds a wave of new album releases. This year the release of the WOMAD compilation is accompanied by four
artists’ own albums of remarkable calibre.
1. WOMAD The World’s Festival 2013 (Cartell / Border)
This album is a fantastic representation of the remarkable range of acts set to take to the stages at WOMAD The World’s Festival 2013 at New Plymouth’s Brooklands Park and TSB Bowl from March 15-17.
2. Salif Keita – Talé (Border)
The “Golden Voice Of Africa” Salif Keita has teamed up with Gotan Project’s Phillipe Cohen-Solal to produce an album of exquisite Malian melodies and transported into the future with the aid of Cohen-Solal.
3. Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba – Jama Ko (Outthere / Southbound)
Fellow Malian musician, Bassekou Kouyate & his band are receiving rave reviews for their newly released album 'Jama Ko' (meaning ‘big gathering of people’).
Amidst the turmoil of his homeland’s current political situation Bassekou has produced a collection of songs intended to
celebrate the open spirit of Mali. The album is resonating with people across the world from his homeland to the upper
echelons of the music critic community in the UK heralded as ’magnificent’ and his ‘finest hour’.
In Bassekou’s words: "No matter if you are rich or poor, Christian or Muslim, a Bamana or Touareg come here to our Jama
ko and let us enjoy together."
4. Melbourne Ska Orchestra – MSO (Universal Music)
Closer to home, Melbourne Ska Orchestra, lead by Nicky Bomba (John Butler Trio), are preparing to release their new album through Universal Music on the 8th of March. Filtering ska and reggae
classics through a big band experience Melbourne Ska Orchestra MSO is dedicated to educating and entertaining audiences
with the sweet sounds of ska – and dancing is compulsory!
5. Beyondsemble – Resurgence (self-released)
Winners of the first ever WOMAD band competition, Auckland based Beyondsemble, on confirmation of their win raced into the studio to record their latest songs to release at the festival! Described
as “more funky- less folky” the melding of old school calypso, funky Irish, dubby world music and gypsy swing is sure to
set the crowds alight at the festival.
