Ten Guitars by Ten Good
Wa’
Auckland Arts Festival show brings
together some of the
very best female
strummers in Aotearoa
I had
a band of men and all they did was give me grief
They
spent all of my money and drank all my tea leaf
They
thought I was a pretty face and rubbish on guitar
I
proved them wrong and in their place I found these…Ten
Good Wa.
On
Saturday March 16, as part of Auckland Arts Festival’s
world premiere music extravaganza Everything is Ka Pai, ten
of the country’s hottest musicians will be bringing back
to life the iconic Kiwi anthem Ten Guitars. The catch? The
song that opens “I have a band of men and all they do is
play for me” is being performed by an all-girl band lead
by popular New Zealand singer-songwriter Anika Moa.
Ten Good Wa is a contemporary revival of the famous 1960s Engelbert Humperdinck hit, that has been adapted and curated by Moa. She’s gathered a group of some of the very best guitarists and string players in Aotearoa, including singer-songwriter Julia Deans (The Adults, Fur Patrol); bass player Marika Hodgson (Sons of Zion, Anika/Boh/Hollie); Tui Award finalist Mel Parsons; folk, rock and jazz guitarist Karen Hunter; ukulele player Selina Patia (Will Crummer and the Rarotongans); and New Zealand’s all-female “Black Quartet” – Jess Hindin (violin), Peau Halapua (violin), Rachel Wells (cello) and Iselta Allison (viola).
Everything is Ka Pai is a brilliant one-off concert in which classic Kiwi anthems take centre stage. From Blue Smoke to Tūtira Mai Ngā Iwi, 60s and 70s chart toppers and famous waiata are redressed in all their finery by some of New Zealand’s most admired contemporary musicians including Annie and Will Crummer, The Yoots, Hinewehi Mohi, Maisey Rika, Ria Hall, St Joseph’s Māori Girls’ Choir, winners of this year’s Te Matatini, Te Waka Huia, the Modern Maori Quartet and the Auckland Ratana Brass Band.
The night is MCed by the hilarious Pio Terei and Waimihi Hōtere, and promises a special visit from the legendary John Rowles.
Everything is Ka Pai Producer, Tama Waipara, says, “If the epic line up for Everything is Ka Pai wasn’t exciting enough, the addition of these seriously talented musos takes it to another level again. New Zealand is renowned for producing extraordinary female singer-songwriters, so we are thrilled Anika has invited such a dynamic group of women to the stage for our event.”
