Anathoth

Analogies with Anathoth, a once fertile place that became an embodiment of desolation, do not chime with the received
image of New Zealand, renowned for its scenic splendour. Iconic paintings by artists such as McCahon, Angus and Binney
celebrate a country of purity and clarity, its distinctively delineated hills of verdant green stretching to limpid
horizons. But to Shepherd these vistas are puzzling, whether considering pre-settlement New Zealand or its later
cultivated topography.
