The Gallery will be opening a bold and intriguing sculpture exhibition next Saturday. Views of Distant Towns by emerging artists Marela Glavaš & Mat Logan features reused materials such as goat horns, lacrosse sticks, velvet and hair to create thought provoking and outstanding art objects. This contemporary exhibition challenges you to look beyond what you initially see and attempt to identify the contrasting identities within the works.
Through their work, Mat Logan and Marela Glavaš seek to present a view of a place that is influenced by history, locality, and culture. Logan's sculptural practice cross-pollinates personal, everyday, colonial, sporting, exotic and essential forms and ideas to create pseudo-cultural objects. Often working with second hand materials, Logan's work transforms these things in an effort to escape the confines of reality.
Like Logan, Glavaš' practice displays an affinity for the history of things already produced. She draws attention to the complex relationship between humans and animals by combining materials which are the product of animals with domestic objects or modes of display. Her work encourages a sense of nostalgia where found objects and historic imagery are re-contextualised. Glavaš puts religious veneration into play within the context of this human versus animal investigation.
Logan and Glavaš will present a brief talk at the opening of the exhibition and invite you back for a more in depth discussion of their work and practice on Wed 13 March 6:00pm.
